PLAN / OF THE ENCAMPMENT ON DARTFORD HEATH / AND OF THE TOWN AND ADJACENT'S VILEGE'S

1745

Pencil, pen, ink and watercolour on paper; laid down on coarse linen | Scale: not stated. 1:18,000 approx. | RCIN 729071

A map of an encampment on Dartford Heath in 1745. War of the Austrian Succession (1740-48). Oriented with north to top.

The camp is represented by a solid elongated red rectangle; the position of the Rear Guards shows that it was facing south-west. No regiments are named. The style of draughting is naive, resembling more a medieval estate plan than a topographical survey from the 1740s.

Condition: no fold lines; trimmed to edge of image.
