War of the Austrian Succession (1740-8)

Includes much of the mapping collected by William Augustus, Duke of Cumberland, as Captain General of the British army

GEORGE AUGUSTUS SCHULTZ (ACTIVE 1734-49)

Encampment at Dielegem, 1745

c.1745

Pencil and watercolour on paper | Scale: not stated. 1:16,000 approx. | RCIN 729132

A sketch of the encampment of the Allied army, under the command of the Duke of Cumberland, at Dielegem, 12-15 July 1745. War of the Austrian Succession (1740-48). Oriented with north to top (compass point indicates north-north-west to top).

Cumberland retreated about 21 km (13 miles) north-eastwards from the encampment at Meerbeke and Ninove (see RCIN 729131) to Dielegem, now on the edge of the north-west suburbs of Brussels. This sketch map, attributed to Schultz on stylistic grounds and the entry in the old catalogue, shows some interesting construction marks. Indentations on the map show that a compass point was inserted in the church symbol of Dielegem Abbey and further markings indicate that its radius was 165 mm. It is possible to see where Schultz has drawn a dry point arc with the compass, which, from the double ruled impressions on the paper, may have had a ruling pen inserted. Sighting lines are also drawn through one of the ravelins on the west side of the fortified walls of Brussels. Corner marks indicate where the border would have been placed on the finished map.

Condition: four fold lines; small tear to left and right of central horizontal fold line; double pin pricks at each end of the central horizontal fold, perhaps where the map had been pinned to another piece of paper, or vice versa.
