Encampment at Grammont, 1745

1745 or later

Pencil, pen, ink and watercolour on paper | Scale: not stated. 1:36,000 approx. | RCIN 729125

A map of the encampment of the Allied army, commanded by the Duke of Cumberland, at Grammont, 30 June to 2 July 1745. War of the Austrian Succession (1740-48). Oriented with north to top.

The move from the camp at Lessines (see RCIN 729114), just 7 km (4.3 miles) away, was prompted by Dutch concerns that the Allied forces were too small to defend the place. In fact, the army moved only the relatively short distance of the length of the encampment, as the map shows. A considered attempt has been made to show, by hachuring, the relative levels of the land on which the camps were pitched. The encampments are indicated only by coloured lines with no attempt made to represent the individual battalions and squadrons.

The map shows three positions for the encamped troops: the encampment west of the Dendre, between Lessines and Boelaer (Overboelare 50°45'49"N 03°51'49"E) which was in place on 30 June, and which the army left on 1 July for the second camp, on the east side of the Dendre, to the east and north of Grammont, which was reached on 2 July. The third position, just to the west of Boerlaer, was occupied by English troops acting as a guard for Cumberland's Headquarters.

The crossing of the River Dendre was made at four locations: two to the north-east of Acren (Les Deux-Acren 50°43'48"N 03°51'11"E), at Bourée (Bourang 50°44'33"N 03°52'05"E), and two to the north of Bourée. The map extends from Grimminghen (Grimminge 50°47'39"N 03°57'07"E) in the north to Lessines in the south, and from Everbeeck (Everbeek 50°45'45"N 03°48'30"E) in the west to Merbeike (Moerbeke 50°45'09"N 03°55'02"E).
