Pencil, pen, ink and watercolour on paper | Scale: 1:36,600 approx. | RCIN 729077

A map of the encampment of the Allied army, under the command of the Duke of Cumberland, at Halle, 30 April 1745. War of the Austrian Succession (1740-48). Oriented with south-west to top (cardinal points).

The regiments are coloured according to nationality but there is no key or annotation to identify the nations, nor are the regiments named. It is probable that red represents the British (the ‘Artill Engle’ is coloured red), yellow is Hanoverian (the ‘Artill Hanov.’ is coloured yellow), Dutch in orange and Austrians in green. According to the symbols, it appears that there were 57 squadrons of horse, nine squadrons of dragoons, 37 infantry battalions and artillery.

The encampment extended for a distance of about 3 km (1.8 miles) from north of Halle in the north, through Lembeek (50°42'56"N 04°13'05"E) to Tubise (Tubize 50°41'26"N 04°12'03"E) in the south.
