c.1745

Pencil, pen, ink and watercolour on paper; laid down on linen | Scale: not stated. 1:25,000 approx. | RCIN 729114

A map of the encampment of the Allied army at Lessines, 17 May 1745. War of the Austrian Succession (1740-48). Oriented with east-south-east to top (cardinal points).

The attribution to Schultz is made on stylistic grounds combined with the old catalogue entry and the annotation on the map.

When the Allied army moved north to Lessines, the distance was such that the rear of the Ath encampment occupied the positions vacated by the van. The Lessines camp extends for about 7 km (4.3 miles) from Lessines in the west, eastwards between Papignies (50°41'09"N 03°49'04"E) and Wannebec (Wannebecq 50°41'36"N 03°47'57"E) to Rebay (Rebaix 50°39'35"N 03°46'59"E).

Additional text: [bottom right, in rectangular panel, unfinished:] A LIST of the different Corps arrived suc- / cessively in the Camp of Lessines, to reinforce / the Army of the Allies, from the [blank] to [blank]. [followed by a blank space where the list was to be written.]

Condition: several fold lines. Verso: foxing; top left, water-stained patch, shadow and fragments from the removal of Cumberland's cipher label.
