A map of the encampment of the Allied army (Austrian, Hanoverian and Dutch) at Mosbach, 26 August 1745. War of the Austrian Succession (1740-48). Oriented with south-west to top (compass rose).

A charming vignette, bottom left, typical of Johann Treu's work, shows soldiers around a camp fire. The troop rectangles are coloured according to nationality: Hanoverian (red), Austrian (blue) and Dutch (yellow). The encampment is shown to the east of Bibrich (Biebrich 50°03'00"N 08°15'00"E) and to the south of the little village of Mosbach, which now appears to be a suburb of Biebrich. A part of Mainz is shown, connected across the Rhine by a bridge to Cassel (Kastel 50°00'31"N 08°16'55"E), at which there is a bridgehead fortification.

Additional text: [bottom left, a key A-I, K, to the locations of demolished French works, boat bridges, a bridgehead fortification begun by the French and augmented by the Allies, lines, batteries and encampments, together with a summary of the Dutch, Hanoverian, and Austrian men and batteries and the number of artillery pieces, and an explanation of the colours used to distinguish the troops.]

Condition: six fold lines; formerly folded to 13.8 x 9.0 cm; two small tears: left margin and bottom margin. Verso: induced discolouration.
