Ostend was a key port for the British whose troops were customarily landed there en route for continental theatres of operations. It fell to the French on 24 August 1745. This map shows the French camps to the north and south of Ostend, and the extensive trenches that were constructed to the south and east. Fort St Philip is shown to the east.
