Plan du / Campement des Alliez / au Chateau de Bié, le 6.me / Aoust...

1744 or later

Pencil, pen, ink and watercolour on paper; laid down on paper | Scale: not stated. 1:34,200 approx. | RCIN 729030

A map of the encampment of the Allied army to the north and south of Pecq, 6 August 1744. War of the Austrian Succession (1740-48). Oriented with west to top.

Possibly in the same hand as RCINs 729011, 729012, 729014, 729017, 729020-22, 729037-8, 729047-58.

The Chateau de Bié is about 1.6 km west of Pecq (50°41'10"N 03°20'16"E). The encampment, on the west bank of the River Escaut (Scheldt), extends from Spiere (50°43'08"N 03°21'22"E) in the north to south of Bomagnies (Ramegnies-Chin 50°39'05"N 03°20'13"E), a distance of about 8 km. The fluvial landscape has been altered considerably by canalisation since the eighteenth century, so that the settlement of Paradis (50°38'42"N 03°21'22"E) is now on the east side of the river. The order of battle at RCIN 729031 at Estaimbourg refers to this encampment.
