Pencil on paper | Scale: 1:1,300 approx. | RCIN 730158.c

A sketch of the proposed line at St Peter's Hill near Maastricht, 1747. War of the Austrian Succession (1740-48). Oriented with west to top.

This plan appears to be part of the compilation materials used for Daniel Paterson's fair drawing of the area at RCIN 730159. It shows the southern end of the intrenched line, just south of Lichtenberg Castle, whose gardens or cultivated fields, surrounded by hedgerows, are to the south of the buildings. Within the line are a number of pits which probably represent lime or chalk pits (a large quarry occupies the site immediately south of the line today). To the west of the line, under cover of existing hedgrows, are the 'covering parties', affording protection while the intrenchments were being constructed.

One of eight sketches of the line and encampment on the west bank of the Maas which was part of the Allied army encampments which were made to the south and east of Maastricht after the Battle of Lafelt (2 July 1747), and while the siege of Bergen op Zoom (14 July-18 September 1747) was being conducted. The geographical relationship between the camp at St Peter's Hill and the rest of the army is shown on RCIN 730142. See RCINs 730158.a-h.
