This survey was made after the siege of Bergen op Zoom (14 July-18 September 1747) by order of Prince Louis Ernest Duke of Brunswick-Lüneburg-Bevern, also known as Duke of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel (1718-88), who was Captain-General of the Netherlands from 1750-66. It shows an apparently comprehensive road network; streams and rivers are named; land use is indicated by generalised symbols which are explained by words on the map: prairies (meadows), bruïére (heath), marais (marshland), inondation (flooded area); polders are named, windmills are drawn in elevation; the locations of the sluice gates used to flood the polders are shown as well as ditches and dams to contain the flooding, and other lines and works constructed by both the French and the Allies.
