A view of the fortifications of Bergen op Zoom, 1747. War of the Austrian Succession (1740-48). Oriented with south-east to top.

The view is taken from the Dedem ravelin. Campbell's note states that he had visited the breaches the day before the French stormed the walls, so this view must represent the state of the destruction on 17 September.

The town of Bergen op Zoom, fortified by Baron Menno van Coehoorn (1641-1704; Dutch military engineer) and garrisoned under the command of General Isaac Cronström (1661-1752; a Swedish officer serving as General in Chief of the Dutch army), was besieged by the French army under the command of General Count Ulrich Löwendahl (1700-55; a German-born Danish officer serving in the French army), from 14 July to 18 September, when the fortified town was taken by the French.
