Includes much of the mapping collected by William Augustus, Duke of Cumberland, as Captain General of the British army

GEORGE AUGUSTUS SCHULTZ (ACTIVE 1734-49)

Map of Breisach, 1743 (Breisach am Rhein, Baden-Württemburg, Germany) 48°01'58"N 07°34'58"E

1743

Pen and ink on paper | Scale: not stated. Not to scale. | RCIN 728123

A sketch of the Austrian pontoon bridge across the Rhine at Breisach, 4 September 1743. War of the Austrian Succession (1740-48). Oriented with west to top. The attribution to Schultz is made on stylistic grounds.

A rough outline sketch showing the Austrian pontoon bridge crossing the Rhine from Hohenfeld to Rheinmarkt island on and behind which are French concealed batteries and an impassable wide ditch. Other French concealed batteries are shown, together with the supply line from French Breisach to Fort Mortier. This sketch, along with RCIN 728124, would have formed part of the compilation materials for Schultz's map of the operations on the Rhine at RCIN 728112.a.

This action was part of the operations in the summer following the Battle of Dettingen (27 June 1743) in which the Allied armies unsuccessfully attempted to invade France by crossing the Rhine.
