War of the Austrian Succession (1740-8)

Includes much of the mapping collected by William Augustus, Duke of Cumberland, as Captain General of the British army

GEORGE AUGUSTUS SCHULTZ (ACTIVE 1734-49)

Map of Rheinweiler, 1743 (Rheinweiler, Baden-Württemberg, Germany) 47°42'37"N 07°32'12"E

c.1743

Pen and ink on paper | Scale: not stated. 1:17,000 approx. | RCIN 728124

A sketch of the crossing points on the Rhine of the Austrian army commanded by Prince Waldeck on 4 September 1743. War of the Austrian Succession (1740-48). Oriented with west to top. The attribution to Schultz is made on stylistic grounds.

This crossing point is about 44 km upstream from Breisach, where a crossing of the Rhine was attempted on the same day by Prince Charles of Lorraine. In this case the crossing by the Austrian army, commanded by Prince Waldeck, was made by boats rather than by bridge. This rough sketch shows the points of embarkation and disembarkation among the many islands in the river, as well as the French batteries. The French camps at Nievres (Niffer, Alsace, France 47°42'50"N 07°30'34"E) and Landau (Petit-Landau, Alsace, France 47°43'50"N 07°31'16"E, opposite the village of Bamlach 47°43'02"N 07°33'01"E) are marked.

This sketch, along with RCIN 728123, would have formed part of the compilation materials for Schultz's map of the operations on the Rhine at RCIN 728112.a.

This action was part of the operations in the summer following the Battle of Dettingen (27 June 1743) in which the Allied armies unsuccessfully attempted to invade France by crossing the Rhine.
