Map of encampment at Anstaing, 1744 (Anstaing, Nord-Pas-de-Calais, France) 50°36'17"N 03°11'26"E

1744 or later

Pencil, pen, ink and watercolour on paper | Scale: not stated. 1:23,800 approx. | RCIN 729038

A map of the encampment of the Allied army under the command of Marshals d'Arenberg and Wade at Anstaing, near Lille, 10 August 1744. War of the Austrian Succession (1740-48). Oriented with west to top.

The camp, on the west side of the River Marque, extends from Tressin (50°37'03"N 03°11'36"E) in the north, through Anstaing, to present-day Huvet, (50°33'33"N 03°09'36"E) in the south. This is a more diagrammatic representation of the layout of the camp than that at RCIN 729035 and appears to be the fair drawing of RCIN 729037. Little topographical detail other than the River Marque, local roads and settlement are shown. This cartographer uses the symbol of double pecked lines within solid lines to indicate a primary road.

Additional text: [top left, in rectangular panel, a key, A-C to the French redoubts at Pont à Tressin, and to the Chateux d'Anstain and Sainghuin Melantois.]

Condition: four fold lines. Verso: some induced discolouration.
