A map of the encampment of the Allied army, under the command of Prince Charles of Lorraine, at Lanaken, 14-17 September 1746. War of the Austrian Succession (1740-48). Oriented with west to top.

In order to march to this camp from the previous camp at Bombaye, a distance of about 7.5 km (4.6 miles), the troops would have had to have crossed the River Meuse/Maas. The camp (Austrians, English, Hanoverians, Hessians, Corps des Hollandois) at Lanaken extends from Gelick (Gellik 50°53'05"N 05°36'36"E) near Lanaken in the north to south of Sint Pieter, east of Naer Kaan (Neerkanne 50°49'00"N 05°40'00"E) in the south, a distance of about 6-7 km. The present-day topography of the southern end of the camp site has changed as a result of the straightening of the River Meuse/Maas, and quarrying.
