A map of the encampment of the Allied army at Westmalle, 2 May 1747. War of the Austrian Succession (1740-48). Oriented with south-west to top (compass rose).

The regimental rectangles are coloured according to nationality: British (red); Hanoverians (light yellow); Austrian (green); Dutch (dark yellow/orange); Hessian (pale blue). The Bavarians appear to be the five regiments coloured in dark yellow lying to the left of the Bavarian artillery which is marked by the letter ‘D’. The position of the detached units of the Grand Guards, to the south of the main encampments, is indicated by small empty, uncoloured rectangles.

Additional text: [bottom, below map, numerical keys to the names of each of the British, Hanoverian, Hessian, Bavarian, Dutch and Austrian cavalry and infantry regiments.]

Condition: three fold lines; some ink smudging to right border; three corners rounded, one square; induced discolouration and foxing to verso. Verso: top left, water-stained patch and shadow from the removal of Cumberland's cipher label.
