Map of encampment at Westmalle, 1747 (Westmalle, Flanders, Belgium) 51°17'51"N 04°41'24"E
c.1747Pencil, pen, ink and watercolour on paper; laid down on linen (two pieces, sewn together) | Scale: 1:19,600 approx. | RCIN 730100
The principal types of land use are distinguished: cultivated land shown by brown and white stripes; meadowland: pale greenish yellow wash; rough heathland with morass: the remainder. The regiments are coloured according to nationality: British (red); Austrians (blue-green); Dutch (orange); Hanoverians (yellow), and Hessians (light blue). Every regiment is named in the key.
The attribution of the rank of Lieutenant to the draughtsman by the Royal Librarian is probably based on the alteration of rank-titles in the Engineers which were altered in 1782 to make them compatible with the non-Board of Ordnance army. Practitioner Engineers were renamed ‘2nd Lieutenants’. (I am grateful to Dr John Houlding for this explanation.)
