Pencil, pen, ink and watercolour on paper | Scale: 1:33,800 approx. | RCIN 729145

A map of the encampment of the Allied army under the command of Marshals Traun and Bathyany between Heidelberg and Ladenburg, 30 July 1745. War of the Austrian Succession (1740-1748). Oriented with south-west to top (cardinal points).

The troop rectangles are not identified but appear to be coloured according to nationality: Austrian (yellow); Dutch (green); Hanoverian (red). The headquarters of Francis Stephen, the Grand Duke of Tuscany (1708-65) is at Heidelberg; the Austrian Generals' headquarters are at Heidelberg, Neuheim (Neuenheim 49°25'00"N 08°41'00"E), and Ladenburg; those of the Dutch are at Dossenheim (49°27'01"N 08°40'29"E), and those of the Hanoverians are at Handschuheim (no longer a separate settlement but part of the urban sprawl between Neuheim and Dossenheim; the name is preserved in the ‘Handschuhsheimer Landstraße’).
