Includes much of the mapping collected by William Augustus, Duke of Cumberland, as Captain General of the British army

    ANONYMOUS

Map of encampment near Dingolfing, 1742 (Dingolfing, Bavaria, Germany) 48°38'00"N 12°30'00"E

    1742 or later

Pencil, pen, ink and watercolour on paper | Scale: 1:15,000 approx. | RCIN 728077

A map of the encampments of the French army on both sides of the Isère near Dingolfing in November and December 1742. War of the Austrian Succession (1740-48). Oriented with south to top (compass rose).

In the same hand as RCIN 728072, Camp at Eger October 1742. A detailed topographical map showing settlements, roads in ochre, meadowland or pasture in a flat green wash, cultivated land by brown cross hatching, sand and gravel banks by brown stippling. The relief is artistically rendered in brown hachures and shading. A line of fire from an Austrian battery at Gottfriding is targeted on two infantry battalions at Dingolfing, a distance of about 2 km. It is possible that the folded size of the map, together with the annotation ‘Enc’, indicates that it was sent to England in dispatches.

Additional text: [bottom, in rectangular panel, a key, 1-55, A-B, to the encamped regiments and a note on the colouring of the regimental rectangles.]

Condition: six fold lines: formerly folded (map inwards) to 14.8 x 11.9 cm. Verso: surface dirt on outer fold lines; ghosting from the removal of Cumberland's cipher label.
