c.1747

Pencil, pen, ink and watercolour on paper | Scale: not stated. 1:13,900 approx. | RCIN 730155

A map of projected fortified lines of the Allied army at St Peter's Hill, July 1747. War of the Austrian Succession (1740-48). Oriented with west to top.

This appears to be a sketch of a suggested line of field fortification for an encampment, made before the final design was adopted. The author makes clear that this projected design would need to be adapted to the terrain. The actual form of the fortified line is shown in RCINs 730153 and 730154, although it should be noted that there are small differences between them. The line and encampment shown here on the west bank of the Meuse were part of the Allied army encampments which were made to the south and east of Maastricht after the Battle of Lafelt (2 July 1747), and while the siege of Bergen op Zoom (14 July-18 September 1747) was being conducted. The geographical relationship between the camp at St Peter's Hill and the rest of the army is shown on RCIN 730142.

Colonel J. Steiger has probably signed this map as an indication of the authenticity of its content. Steiger also appears to have written the note, which appears above his signature. It is possible that the addition to the title of the words ‘und der Situation des Bergs nach dem gesicht gemacht’ are also in his hand. The map appears to have been drawn by another officer whose indecipherable signature is bottom right of the map.
