1743 or laterPencil, pen, ink and watercolour on six pieces of paper, joined; laid down on linen; edged with cerise silk; two linen ties to left edge | Scale: 1:95,000 approx. | RCIN 728103
A beautifully executed map covering the area extending from Frankfurt am Main (50°07'00"N 08°41'00"E) in the north to Philipsburg (49°14'09"N 08°27'23"E) in the south, and from Nieder-Ingelheim (49°58'39"N 08°04'20"E) in the west to Aschaffenburg (49°58'26"N 09°08'57"E) in the east. It is unfinished; the large panel, bottom left, intended for the insertion of text headed ‘A JOURNAL of all the MARCHES and INCAMPMENTS of the Army of the Allies / from the Battle of Dettingen to the End of the Campain, 1743’, has been left blank.
This map would have been compiled from printed small-scale maps augmented by field surveys, orders of battle and various regimental documents such as officers' returns. Three of the source maps, which include text which would have formed part of the missing journal, are at RCINs 728104.a-c. See also RCINs 728116, 728117, 728125, 728126, 728127, 728128. The continuation of the operations further south along the Rhine appears on RCIN 728112.a.
