War of the Austrian Succession (1740-8)

Includes much of the mapping collected by William Augustus, Duke of Cumberland, as Captain General of the British army

Dettingen and Rhine, 1743 (Dettingen am Main, Bavaria, Germany) 50°02ʹ29ʺN 09°02ʹ00ʺE

1743 or later

Pencil, pen, ink and watercolour on three sheets of thin paper, previously joined | Scale: 1:89,000 approx. | RCIN 728104.a

A map of the encampments of the Allied army along the Main and Rhine between 12 August and 13 October 1743. War of the Austrian Succession (1740-48). Oriented with west to top. The attribution to Schultz is made on stylistic grounds and with reference to the old catalogue entry.

This is a rough drawing of the British, Austrian, Hessian and Hanoverian encampments and marches between Frankfurt am Main (50°07'00"N 08°41'00"E), Mainz (50°00'00"N 08°16'16"E), and Worms (49°38'08"N 08°21'35"E). What appears to be the continuation of this map, from Worms south to Germersheim (49°13'23"N 08°21'50"E) is on RCIN 728104.c. This sketch would have formed one of the source materials for the finished map at RCIN 728103, and the descriptive text might have been used in the compilation of the 'Journal' which was left blank on that map.

The maps were formerly kept in a thick light buff rag folder, 50.5 x 31.4 cm (folded size), on the front of which is inscribed, in ink: No.s 328-330 / [old heading, red ink:] Battle of Dettingen 27 June 1743 and Encampments from that time to / the 13 Oct.r 1743 / [black pencil, in a modern hand:] (a b c Oct. '86).

Additional text: [bottom left, a key, A-I, K-V, X, to the location of the campsites, with dates and march routes.]

Condition: eight fold lines; very yellow with age.
