War of the Austrian Succession (1740-8)

Includes much of the mapping collected by William Augustus, Duke of Cumberland, as Captain General of the British army

? GEORGE AUGUSTUS SCHULTZ (ACTIVE 1734-49)

Map of the Battle of Dettingen, 1743 (Dettingen am Main, Bavaria, Germany) 50°02'29"N 09°02'00"E

1743 or later

Pencil, pen, ink and watercolour on thin paper | Scale: 1:90,000 approx. | RCIN 728104.b

A map of the encampments of the Allied army along the Main and Rhine between 12 August and 13 October 1743. War of the Austrian Succession (1740-48). Oriented with west to top. The attribution to Schultz is made on stylistic grounds and with reference to the old catalogue entry.

This is a rough but detailed drawing of the Battle of Dettingen, 27 June 1743, and the subsequent marches and camps of the British, Austrian, Hessian and Hanoverian armies between Dettingen and Frankfurt am Main (50°07'00"N 08°41'00"), up to 5 August. This sketch would have formed one of the source materials for the finished map at RCIN 728103 and the descriptive text would have formed one of the sources for the 'Journal' which was left blank on that map.

The maps were formerly kept in a thick light buff rag folder, 50.5 x 31.4 cm (folded size), on the front of which is inscribed, in ink: No.s 328-330 / [old heading, red ink:] Battle of Dettingen 27 June 1743 and Encampments from that time to / the 13 Oct.r 1743 / [black pencil, in a modern hand:] (a b c Oct. '86).

Additional text: [top left, below title, a descriptive key, A-I, K-Z, to the actions during the battle.]

Condition: six fold lines; four small holes in the text area, top right, perhaps where the acid from the ink has bitten through; unevenly trimmed; very yellow with age.
