1745 or later

Pencil, pen, ink and watercolour on paper | Scale: not stated. 1:21,000 approx. | RCIN 729157

A map of the Battle of Soor fought on 30 September 1745 between the Prussian army, commanded by Frederick II (The Great), King of Prussia (1712-86), and the Austro-Saxon army, commanded by Prince Charles Alexander of Lorraine (1712-80), resulting in a Prussian victory. War of the Austrian Succession (1740-48). Oriented with north to top.

In the same hand as RCINs 729116 and 729159.

The regimental names of the Austrian-Saxon Army only are given, suggesting that the cartographer may be an officer of one of these nationalities. The encampment site of the Prussian army, before the battle, just to the west of Burkersdorf, is shown and some attempt is made to show the ridges of higher ground that surrounded the position. This ground was used by the Austro-Saxon Army to reconnoitre the Prussian position and to plan to encircle them. The Prussians, outnumbered and taken by surprise, by seizing the initiative and rushing to the attack, gained the battle.
