Two maps of the environs of Bergen op Zoom and its fortifications during the French siege, 1747. War of the Austrian Succession (1740-48). Oriented with east to top. One sheet with a map on each side.

The town of Bergen op Zoom, fortified by Menno van Coehoorn and garrisoned under the command of General Cronström, was besieged by the French army under the command of Count Löwendahl, from 14 July to 18 September, when the fortified town was overrun by the French.

These rough sketches show the state of the operations at the beginning of August 1747 and were made by Charles Bisset, whose regiment, also known as Loudon's Highlanders, formed part of the town's garrison at the time.

Condition: six fold lines; formerly folded to 11.6 x 11.6 cm.

RCINs 730149.a and b were formerly contained in a rough buff paper folder measuring 51.5 x 33.3 cm (folded size) on the front of which is written the old heading; also inscribed on the front, in ink is: No. 642-643 [these are the stamped numbers on the items]; in black pencil, in a modern hand: a & b CMB Nov '86 [i.e. 1986].
