c.1748

Pencil, ink and watercolour on four sheets of paper, joined; laid down on four pieces of linen, stitched together | Scale: 1:14,400. | RCIN 731015

A map of the encampment of the Allied army at Hellenrouck, 1748. War of the Austrian Succession (1740-48). Oriented with north-west to top (compass rose).

This survey, which was undertaken by six young engineers, covers an area extending from Venlo (51°22'12"N 06°10'05"E) in the north-east to Roermond in the south-west. The western boundary is formed by the River Meuse, and the southern boundary by the River Roer. What appears to be the fair copy of the original survey is at RCIN 731014; this is another copy of the survey. Although it is neatly drawn, it shows far less micro-topographical detail such as variations in ground level and surface quality and would not have been as useful for reading the landscape as the copy at RCIN 731014.

Condition: two fold lines; 4.2 cm tear to bottom of right fold line; surface dirt; some foxing.
