Pencil, pen, ink and watercolour on paper | Scale: not stated | RCIN 729150

A large-scale plan of a small fortification on the banks of the Rhine near Stockstadt, 1745. War of the Austrian Succession (1740-48). Oriented with west to top.

This area of the Rhine has changed so greatly, the river having been straightened, that it is not possible to pinpoint the exact location of the bridgehead. It lies on the west bank of the old Rhine, east of Gembsheim (Gimbsheim, Rhineland-Palatinate 49°46'40"N 08°22'30"E). Although the small fortification is described as a bridgehead, no bridge is shown. Major-General Lannoy, the constructor of the fortification, was an officer in the Dutch army.
