PLAN / des Attaques / D'YPRES

published 1744

Etching and engraving; printed on paper; hand-coloured | Scale: 1:15,300 approx. | RCIN 729018

A plan of the French attack on Ypres, 15-24 June 1744. War of the Austrian Succession (1740-48). Oriented with east to top (cardinal points).

A detailed map of the fortifications of Ypres (see also RCIN 729001.c), with the French attack works on the north side, shown in yellow. This fortress was one of three built by Vauban (the other two were Knocke and Furnes), which were designed to form an impassable wall to invaders from the south. The French had already taken Menen, the first obstacle to an army coming from the south, on 5 June. The French forces began the siege of Ypres (see also RCIN 729001.c) on 15 June and the town capitulated nine days. They went on to take Knocke on 29 June (RCIN 729001.d), and Furnes (RCINs 729001.e, 729026) fell to the French just two weeks later.
