Pencil, pen, ink and watercolour on paper | Scale: 1:322,000 approx. | RCIN 725047

A map of Brabant showing the French lines, the marches of the Allied army and their encampments in 1705 and the forcing of the French lines on 18 June. War of the Spanish Succession (1701-14). Oriented with north to top.

The map extends approximately from Louvain (Leuven, Flanders 50°52'46"N 04°42'03"E) in the north-west to Diest (Flanders 50°59'21"N 05°03'02"E) in the north-east, and from Namur (Walloon Region 50°28'00"N 04°52'02"E) in the south-west to Huy (Walloon Region 50°31'08"N 05°13'58"E) in the south-east.

The topographical details such as rivers and settlements have probably been taken from a printed map. The French fortified lines are shown running from north-east of Namur to north of Aarschot (Flanders 50°59'13"N 04°50'13"E), a distance of about 60 km (37 miles). The march routes of the Allied army, generally in four columns, are shown by red dashed lines.

This plan appears to have been removed from a volume of manuscript maps and plans of sieges. Other maps, perhaps in a different hand but, apparently from the same volume, are scattered throughout the collection: RCINs [724061], [724090], 725007, 725009, 725011, 725013, 725021, 725023, 725027, 725030, 725032, 725041, [725044], 725045, [725055], 725074, 725087, 725098, 726007, 726014, 726022, 726041, 726045, 726053, 726065, 726073, 726080, 726086, 726090, 727004, 727007, 727011, 727013, 727014.
