The tentative attribution to Nevil Tatton is made on stylistic grounds and would have been copied by him from an earlier map, while he was on duty in Flanders with the Duke of Cumberland's army in the 1740s during the War of the Austrian Succession (1740-48).
The map covers a corridor of land stretching from Tirlemont (Tienen, Flanders 50°48'26"N 04°56'10"E) in the north-west (top right of the map) to Falais (Fallais, Walloon Region 50°36'36"N 05°10'16"E) in the south-east, passing through Hannuye (Hannut, Walloon Region 50°40'17"N 05°04'44"E).
