War of the Spanish Succession (1701-14)

Sieges, marches, encampments and famous battles from 1701 to 1712 in Germany, Italy and the Netherlands

? GEORGE AUGUSTUS SCHULTZ (ACTIVE 1734-49)

Encampment at Dasing, 1704

1742 or later

Pencil, pen, ink and watercolour on paper | Scale: not stated. 1:29,000 approx. | RCIN 725034

A map of the encampment of the Allied army (British, Dutch and German) east of Dasing in August 1704. War of the Spanish Succession (1701-14). Oriented with west to top.

The attribution to Schultz is made on stylistic grounds. This map is probably a copy made by Schultz in the 1740s of a map made by military surveyors during the War of the Spanish Succession. It is unfinished, lacking the title which was designed to be lettered in the blank scroll at the top of the map, and, probably, the scale statement in the blank panel bottom centre. The ‘Aicha’ referred to in the old heading, and in the old catalogue, probably refers to Aichach (48°27'27"N 11°08'02"E) which is about 9.6 km (6 miles) north-east of Dasing.

The map covers the area from Datingen (Taiting 48°24'12"N 11°03'11"E) in the north-west to Lahmeringen (Laimering 48°23'20"N 11°05'13"E) in the north-east, and from Otmeringen (Ottmaring 48°19'57"N 11°00'28"E ) in the south-west to east of Rinnenthal (48°20'40"N 11°03'03"E) and Revespach (Rehrosbach 48°20'28"N 11°03'43"E) in the south-east.

Condition: one fold line. Verso: induced discoloration; top left: water-stained patch, shadow and ghosting from the removal of Cumberland's cipher label: VOL. II / 10.
