The attribution to Schultz is made on stylistic grounds. This map would probably have been copied by him from an earlier map, while he was on duty in Flanders with the Duke of Cumberland's army in the 1740s during the War of the Austrian Succession (1740-48). Information about past camps and marches would have been directly relevant to logistical planning during the later war.
The encampment passed through or near to the following places, all in the present-day Walloon Region of Belgium: Archennes (50°45'09"N 04°40'10"E), Godechiens (Gottechain 50°45'25"N 04°42'51"E), Grez (Grez-Doiceau 50°44'20"N 04°41'53"E), Nodebain (Nodebais 50°46'22"N 04°44'12"E), Tourin (Tourinnes-la-Grosse 50°46'58"N 04°44'39"E), Bovechien (Beauvechain 50°46'55"N 04°46'18"E), Geest St Remy (Saint-Remy-Geest 50°44'48"N 04°51'30"E).
Condition: one fold line; three pin holes along each of left and right edges, as if the paper has been pinned to a board. Verso: induced discolouration; top left, water-stained patch, shadow and some ghosting from the removal of Cumberland's cipher label.
