1711 or later

Pen, ink and watercolour on paper; gilt edges left, bottom and right | Scale: not stated. 1:69,000 approx. | RCIN 726041

A map of the siege of Bouchain, 6 August-13 September 1711, by the Allied army (Great Britain, Dutch Republic, Austria), commanded by John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough (1650-1722), resulting in the surrender of the town by the French, commanded by Marshal Claude Louis Hector de Villars (1643-1734); and also of the siege of Douai, besieged by Marlborough and the Allied army from 23 April to its capitulation on 26 June 1710. War of the Spanish Succession (1701-14). Oriented with south-east to top.

The map shows the lines of circumvallation, the encampments of the Allied and French armies, the field works and lines and march routes of the Allied and French armies. Many settlements are named.

This plan appears to have been removed from a volume of manuscript maps and plans of sieges. Other maps, perhaps in a different hand but, apparently from the same volume, are scattered throughout the collection: RCINs [724061], [724090], 725007, 725009, 725011, 725013, 725021, 725023, 725027, 725030, 725032, 725041, [725044], 725045, 725047, [725055], 725074, 725087, 725098, 726007, 726014, 726022, 726045, 726053, 726065, 726073, 726080, 726086, 726090, 727004, 727007, 727011, 727013, 727014.
