The attribution to Nevil Tatton is made on stylistic grounds. This map would have been copied by him from an earlier map, while he was on duty in Flanders with the Duke of Cumberland's army in the 1740s during the War of the Austrian Succession (1740-48). Information about past camps and marches would have been directly relevant to logistical planning during the later war.
The map covers a corridor of land stretching from Tirlemont (Tienen, Flanders 50°48'26"N 04°56'10"E) in the north-west (top right of the map) to Falais (Fallais, Walloon Region 50°36'36"N 05°10'16"E) in the south-east, passing through Hannuye (Hannut, Walloon Region 50°40'17"N 05°04'44"E).
