The attribution to Tatton is made on stylistic grounds. This map is probably a copy made by Tatton of an original survey by John Armstrong, when Armstrong was serving as a field engineer with the chief engineer, Brigadier Holcroft Blood in Flanders under the command of Marlborough in 1703. John Armstrong rose to become a Major-General, Chief Engineer and Surveyor General of the Board of Ordnance.
This map would have been used by Cumberland to plan sites for encampments during the War of the Austrian Succession (1740-48). It shows useful topographical features such as open and enclosed roads, and sunken roads and marshy ground.
The settlements shown on the map are all in present-day Flanders, in Belgium, and include Bockhowe (Boekhout 50°44'44"N 05°13'59"E), Buvigen (50°45'09"N 05°10'36"E), Joeck [or Joeek] (Jeuk 50°44'06"N 05°12'35"E), Kerkum (Kerkom-bij-Sint-Truiden 50°46'25"N 05°10'42"E), Marlin ou Mechlin (Mechelen-Bovelingen 50°44'26"N 05°15'46"E), Meuze (Muizen 50°45'37"N 05°10'45"E), Mille boven Alst (Mielen-boven-Aalst 50°45'23"N 05°12'51"E).
Condition: one fold line; small tear at top of fold, repaired with white paper strip; trimmed. Verso: bottom, right of centre, water-stained patch, shadow and ghosting from the removal of Cumberland's cipher label.
