War of the Spanish Succession (1701-14)

Sieges, marches, encampments and famous battles from 1701 to 1712 in Germany, Italy and the Netherlands

? GEORGE AUGUSTUS SCHULTZ (ACTIVE 1734-49)

Map of the siege of Limbourg, 1703 (Limbourg, Walloon Region, Belgium) 50°36'44"N 05°56'28"E)

1742 or later

Pencil, pen, ink and watercolour; drawn on two sheets of paper, joined; laid down on coarse linen | Scale: 1:11,600 approx | RCIN 725029

A map of the siege of Limbourg, conducted by the Allied army, commanded by Captain-General, John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough (1650-1722), from 19 to 27 September 1703, when the French garrison surrendered. War of the Spanish Succession (1701-14). Oriented with north-west to top.

The attribution to Schultz is made on stylistic grounds. It is probable that this is a copy of an earlier map, made during the War of the Spanish Succession (1702-14).

The map covers an area approximately bounded by Viller (Villers 50°38'18"N 05°54'59"E), Verviers (50°35'52"N 05°51'44"E), Hevremont (Hèvremont 50°35'47"N 05°56'04"E) and Balen (Baelen 50°37'52"N 05°58'27"E). Marlborough's headquarters are marked at Vervier.
