A map of Breda, besieged for the fifth time from 21 July to 11 October 1637 by the Dutch, commanded by Frederick Henry, Prince of Orange (29 January 1584-14 March 1647), who retook the city from the Spanish who were under the command of the Cardinal-Infante Ferdinand of Austria (May 1609-9 November 1641). Eighty Years War (1568-1648). Oriented with west-north-west to top (cardinal points).

This is a later, revised, version of an earlier map by Claes Jansz. Visscher which, lacking the inset, bottom left, shows the situation in July 1636 (Rijksmuseum RP-P-OB-81.412). The revised version, which shows the extension of the fortifications towards the end of the siege, is noted in Campbell, (1968), no.21. The example of this revised state in the Rijksmuseum (RP-P-OB-81.411) has letterpress text, printed below on the same sheet of paper, entitled: Aldernieuste gecorrigeerde en verbe- / terde Caerte van / BREDA, / Met een kort en bondigh verhael der / Stadt, haer ghelegentheyt, wederva- / ren, ende veranderinghe, door de Ne- / derlantsche Oorlogen over-kommen. with the imprint, br: ‘t’AMSTERDAM, By Claes Iansz. Visscher, 1637.
