Bussche was serving in the Hanoverian army at the time of his death. Moments before he was struck down he had been insisting on remaining in the line of fire in order to encourage the troops. He was hit by a cannonball which took off his right arm - the stump seen here swaddled in cloth - and bruised his right side. The view shows his body being supported by his first adjutant (in a bicorne), de Töbing. The General's four sons (two of whom were named Hans von dem Bussche-Haddenhausen (1774-1851), who became a General and Ludwig August Friedrich von dem Bussche Haddenhausen (1772-1852)), are portrayed. One stands immediately to the right behind Töbing, and, at the right edge of the central group, two more brothers, one with his arm outstretched towards the fourth brother who is preparing to mount his horse.
At the left edge of the central group stands the General's nephew, Lieutenant de Bussche, on whose left is Captain de Wurmb. The standing officers in the group to the left are, to the left left: Captain Bodecker, and to the right: Captain de Rheden. Other figures named, but not identified on the view are: Lieutenant-Colonel de Walthausen, Major de Heimbruch, Major de Houstedt, Major de Lixfeld, Captain Offeney and Captain Best.
