published 19 Jul 1799

Etching and engraving; printed on paper; hand coloured | Scale: 1:1,600 approx. | RCIN 735076.1

A plan of the position of the troops at the review by George III of the Volunteers in Hyde Park, 4 June 1799. French Revolutionary Wars (1792-1802). Oriented with north to top.

The author of this plan, Charles Random, who later took the name Charles Random, Baron de Bérenger de Beaufain on his marriage to the widow, Baroness de Béranger, sometime before 1814, was, subsequent to the making of this plan, confined to the debtors's prison in 1811 and then jailed for a year for his part in the great Stock Exchange scandal of 1814. A notable shot, he became a member of the Duke of Cumberland's (Ernest Augustus, 1771-1851, later King of Hanover) Sharpshooters which were raised on 5 September 1803.

A watercolour over an etched outline of the King reviewing the Volunteer Corps in Hyde Park in 1799 by Robert Smirke is in the Government Art Collection number 10674. This was later engraved by Richard Earlom and published by John and Josiah Boydell in 1801.
