Etching and engraving; printed on paper | Scale: not stated | RCIN 724074

A map of the area around Namur showing the positions of the Allied encampments at the siege of Namur which took place between 2 July and 1 September 1695, resulting in an Allied victory. Nine Years War (1688-97). Oriented with north to top.

One of the figures at the right hand of the title cartouche appears to be a Roman soldier with a shield in his left hand emitting a sunburst, representing Louis XIV. Below the soldier, a Janus figure holds up a bowl which repels the sunburst; an eagle and lightning bolt represent dominant power. To the right of the explanatory text a seated semi-naked woman holds, in her right hand, a shield with the coat of arms of Namur.

This map was one of four maps that were published in Relation de la Campagne de Flandre, et du Siege de Namur, En l’Année 1695. Avec Les Cartes Et Les Plans Necessaires Pour La Parfaite Intelligence De Cette Relation. A La Haye, Chez Henry Van Bulderen, Marchand Libraire, dans le Pooten, à l’Enseigne de Mezeray. 1696. See RCIN 1028090.
