About half of Schomberg's army died from dysentery while in the camp. The men were encamped throughout in conditions of heavy rains, very cold nights, fog, drizzle and generally stormy weather. The map shows four main land-use types: arable land is depicted with lines of parallel dashes; rough grassland is shown by groups of curved horizontal strokes, the top stroke longer than the two or three lines below it; the symbol for wet grassland or marsh comprises two upright strokes resting on a horizontal line and what is possibly grazing land is left blank. The Williamite encampment is situated on a promontary of slightly higher ground to the north of Dundalk.
