Map of the siege of Kinsale, 1690 (Kinsale, Munster, Ireland) 51°42ʹ27ʺN 08°31ʹ50ʺW
1690 or laterPencil, pen, ink and watercolour on paper | Scale: 1:9,000 approx. | RCIN 724049
This map shows the two forts that guarded the town of Kinsale. Marlborough had not realised that the newer Fort Charles (Le nouveais Fort), was equipped with 200 bronze guns mounted on the five bastions which can be seen on the map. Marlborough's first assault was on the old fort, across the river. When this was captured, Marlborough's engineers dug trenches towards Fort Charles and the combined British and Danish forces used cannon (positioned in the ‘Batterie’) and mortars (‘Batterie des Bombes’) to bombard the fort into submission.
