Map of the siege of Limerick, 1691 (Limerick, Munster, Ireland) 52°39ʹ53ʺN 08°37ʹ23ʺW

1691 or later

Pencil, pen, ink and watercolour on two pieces of paper, joined; with a revised drawing of the fortified town of Limerick pasted over the original base map; some pricking through | Scale: 1:5,000 approx. | RCIN 724055

A map of existing and proposed fortifications of Jacobite-held Limerick at the siege under Patrick Sarsfield (c.1660-93) by Williamite forces, commanded by General Godert de Ginkell, later 1st Earl of Athlone (1630-1703), resulting in the capitulation of the town; the siege had gone on from August to 3 October 1691. Williamite-Jacobite War in Ireland (1688-91), part of the Nine Years War (1688-97). Oriented, on the fiche, with east to top.

There are important differences in detail between this large-scale survey of the siege works around Limerick and those shown on RCIN 724054. Additional walls have been drawn around the old fort on King's Island, and the old fort across the Shannon opposite Limerick has been completed; small redoubts have been drawn on the causeway across the marshland shown in yellow (annotated in pencil: ‘marais’); the line of the trench between Lisburne's redoubt and Nassau's fort (‘P’ and ‘K’ on RCIN 724054) which, on RCIN 724054, looks as though it has been drawn in such a way as to indicate an older work, and has been redrawn with an extra redoubt, and there are other examples. All of these additional works are drawn in dotted lines which suggest that they were proposed, rather than actual structures: i.e., the proposed renovation of old fortifications and the building of new defensive works. This map, unlike RCIN 724054, does not show any troop positions.
