PLAN / DE NAMVR / AVEC SES ATTAQVES

1695 or later

Pencil, pen, ink and watercolour on paper | Scale: 1:9,000 approx. | RCIN 724079

A map of Namur, besieged by the Allied army, commanded by William III of England (1650-1702) from 2 July to 1 September 1695, resulting in the capitulation of the French garrison, commanded by Louis François, duc de Boufflers (1644-1711). Nine Years War (1688-97). Oriented with north to top.

This map shows Vauban's extensions to the fortifications which he made by adding a bastion on the Heights of Bouge to the east of the town, and two more to the west of it and constructing a strong stone redoubt between the Coehoorn and Terra Nova Forts to the west. It also shows, in detail, in yellow, the trenches of the Allied approach works to the east of the town, on the Heights of Bouge and on the south side of the River Sambre, as well as in front of the Coehoorn and Terrra Nova Forts.
