DENDERMONDE / Attaqué le 11 Aoüst / 1745. Rendu le 12

1745 or later

Etching and engraving; printed on paper; hand-coloured | Scale: 1:13,500 approx. | RCIN 729148

A map of the town of Dendermonde showing the French approaches on 11 August 1745. War of the Austrian Succession (1740-48). Oriented with north-north-west to top (cardinal points).

The French attack on Dendermonde was part of a general French offensive in the Low Countries during 1745.

Standing at the junction of the Rivers Dendre and Scheldt, Dendermonde was surrounded by marshy land, indicated in this map by the symbol comprising horizontal lines and marks with occasional tufts to represent vegetation. The redoubt to the north-east, indicated by the letter A, was removed, enabling the water (inondation) to be drained away. The hand-colouring is only applied to what appears to be an intrenchment leading to a redoubt on the east side of the town.
