NEVIL TATTON (ACTIVE 1744-75)

Map of encampment at Soignies, 1745 (Soignies, Walloon Region, Belgium) 50°34'44"N 04°04'16"E

1745 or later

Pencil, pen, ink and watercolour on paper | Scale: 1:21,200 approx. | RCIN 729081

A map of the encampment of the Allied army at Soignies, 2-5 May 1745. War of the Austrian Succession (1740-48). Oriented with north to top (cardinal points).

There is no evidence, other than the note in the old catalogue entry, for the attribution of the source of this map to Schultz.

The regimental rectangles are coloured according to nationality; there is no key to the colours, nor are the regiments named. It is probable, based on the colours used by Schultz on other maps and orders of battle, that the British are in red, Dutch in orange, Hanoverian in yellow, and Austrians in green. The camp extends for a distance of about 5 km (3 miles) from Neufville (Neufvilles 50°34'15"N 04°00'01"E) to the south of Soignies.

Condition: no fold lines; pin pricks in each corner. Verso: induced discolouration.
  • Nevil Tatton (active 1744-75) (draughtsman) [bottom right, inside neatline:] N: Tatton.
