Plan of Bergen op Zoom, 1747 (Bergen op Zoom, North Brabant, Netherlands) 51°29'42"N 04°17'30"E

      c.1747

Pencil, pen, ink and watercolour on paper | Scale: not stated. 1:1,200 approx. | RCIN 730151.g

A plan of the attack of the French army on Bergen op Zoom, 1747. War of the Austrian Succession (1740-48). Oriented with north-west to top.

The plan shows the locations of the French mines which had been sprung, and those of the Allies which had been sprung on the seven nights between 20 and 27 August. The bastions, etc., are not named but appear to be the Coehoorn battery on the left and the Busell battery on the right, with the Diedem ravelin in the middle, flanked forwards by the Zeeland lunette on the left and the Utrecht lunette on the right. The outlines of these features do not correspond exactly with the way they are drawn on other plans and may be slightly stylised.

The town of Bergen op Zoom, fortified by Baron Menno van Coehoorn (1641-1704; Dutch military engineer) and garrisoned under the command of General Isaac Cronström (1661-1752; a Swedish officer serving as General in Chief of the Dutch army), was besieged by the French army under the command of General Count Ulrich Löwendahl (1700-55; a German-born Danish officer serving in the French army), from 14 July to 18 September, when the fortified town was taken by the French.

Additional text: [top right, a key to the locations of the mines sprung by the French, and those sprung by the Allies between 20 and 27 August.]

      Condition: no fold lines.

One of a collection of 24 plans and sketches of the fortifications of Bergen op Zoom, showing various stages of the siege of 1747, by James Abercrombie, Charles Bisset, Dugal Campbell, and J.P. Isenbart and other anonymous draughtsmen. See RCINs 730151.a-x (j and v not included).
