This map was previously published in Pieter Mortier's Atlas Nouveau a l'Usage de Monsieur le Duc de Bourgogne. Shirley (2004, vol.1, p.729) lists it as item 74 in Vol.2 of the atlas (BL Maps C.39.f.14/2). Mortier's atlas was itself an augmented edition of Alexis Hubert Jaillot and Pieter Mortier's Atlas Nouveau, Contenant Touts les Parties du Monde ... [1692] (Shirley, 2004, vol.1, pp.580-82) to which new maps, including this, were added. The first edition of Jaillot's atlas was based on work by Nicolas Sanson (1600-67). Mortier did, however, attribute the authorship of some maps to Sanson for which there was no basis in fact (van Egmond, 2004, pp.107-8). Mortier's earlier version of this map has the same title but the imprint reads: 'à AMSTERDAM chez P. MORTIER Avec Privil. / On vend chez le mesme trois diferente Plans de Mantoue tres belle et toutte les autres Villes d'Italie.'.
This map shows the routes by which Prince Eugene of Savoy (1663-1736), commanding the Imperial army, entered northern Italy on his way to Milan. The campsites of his winter quarters in 1701 are clearly depicted west of Mantova.
